One outstanding Alberta employer or organization will receive the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta 2006 Healthy Workplace Initiative Award. Employees and organizations are encouraged to submit nominations for this unique award.
“The award recognizes the winners for the outstanding contribution they have made to the well-being and psychological health of their organization or employees,” says Dr. Sally Barros, President of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta. “Each year we celebrate their contribution to their workplace at our annual awards banquet that is held in May.”
Examples of healthy workplace initiatives that could be considered include: implementation of family-friendly policies, initiation of programs for employee growth and development, delivery of stress reduction programs, and promotion of health and wellness. To be eligible for the award program these initiatives must be current, be directly related to employee wellness, and be of practical benefit to employees and/or their families.
Associated Engineering Group Ltd. of Edmonton won the 2005 award for recognizing that the staff is the prime ingredient of their success. They respect their staff’s personal and family needs and believe in work-life balances. Associated Engineering has an active social club in each of their offices which encourages a fun and social atmosphere in the office and after work events/activities. They recognize that wellness starts at home and that an employee with a healthy home environment is happier in the workplace. As such, they support flexible work hours as well as reduced work hours, which allows staff to fit harmony and balance between work and family. Associated Engineering promotes personal growth and continuing professional development through their active training program. Associated Engineering recognizes that consulting engineering is a fast-paced and highly energetic industry and that this environment places stress on its staff. To reduce stress, they have implemented a Health and Wellness Program.
“We implemented this award because we believe an environment that emphasizes wellness promotes better functioning in the workplace, at home and in the community. We want to encourage and recognize the forward thinking that leads to programs such as those implemented by Associated Engineering Group Ltd.. They have made our community a better place to live,” concludes Dr. Barros.
