For Immediate Release
One outstanding Alberta employer or organization will receive the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta 2005 Healthy Workplace Initiative Award. Employees and organizations are encouraged to submit nominations for this unique award.
“The award recognizes the winners for the outstanding contribution they have made to the well-being and psychological health of their organization or employees,” says Dr. Sally Barros, President of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta. “Each year we celebrate their contribution to their workplace at our annual awards banquet that is held in May.”
Examples of healthy workplace initiatives that could be considered include: implementation of family-friendly policies, initiation of programs for employee growth and development, delivery of stress reduction programs, and promotion of health and wellness. To be eligible for the award program these initiatives must be current, be directly related to employee wellness, and be of practical benefit to employees and/or their families.
“Canterra Suites Executive Hotel of Edmonton won the 2004 award for treating their employees as ‘people first’ and ‘employees second’” says Barros. “They have an exceptional program in place for health and wellness and have implemented family-friendly policies to accommodate schedule changes typical in the hospitality industry.”
Another past winner is Strathcona County which offers employees and their families professional and confidential help with a broad range of personal and work-related concerns such as personal and job stress, relationship conflicts, care of children or aging parents, alcohol and drug problems, grief and loss, balancing work and family and career choices.
“We implemented this award program because we know an environment that stresses wellness is far better for life in the workplace, at home and in the community. We want to encourage and recognize the forward thinking that leads to programs such as those implemented by Strathcona County and Canterra Suites. They have made our community a better place to live,” concludes Barros.
