Psychology Month Declared

February is Psychology Month in Canada. The Psychologists Association of Alberta is joining forces with other Canadian psychology associations to celebrate the profession.

“During the month-long event psychologists will draw attention to the role psychology plays in the well-being of Canadians,” says Dr. Sally Barros, President of the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta. “We have selected the theme, “Psychology Is For Everyone!” because of the broad impact psychology has on the entire community.”

Through their interventions, psychologists help people understand, explain, and modify their behaviour to overcome stress and other mental health issues that affect their lives. Psychologists are intensively trained to scientifically analyze how people think, feel and behave. “This training enables us to effectively listen to patients and then provide sound practical assistance or interventions,” adds Dr. Barros.

Psychology is a regulated profession under the Health Professions Act. Alberta Psychologists work in many different settings including mental heath clinics, hospitals, correctional settings, industries, private practices, schools, and universities.

The Psychologists’ Association of Alberta operates a referral service for individuals who require the services of a psychologist. The number to call in Edmonton is 428-Talk (8255), in Calgary the number is 246-Talk (8255), or anywhere in Alberta 1-888-424-0297.
