Position Overview:
For well over two decades Youth Addiction Services has been providing exceptional treatment and prevention programming to Albertans. The successful candidate in this position will be a key member of the Unit and will support staff as they provide a high level of clinical support to adolescents and families experiencing addiction and mental health concerns.
Reporting to the Care Manager of Child & Adolescent Addiction & Mental Health Youth Addiction Services, the Psychologist will function as a pivotal member of a multi-disciplinary team. This position will provide coaching and support to a minimum of 9 regulated and non-regulated staff in the areas of addiction / mental health and risk assessment, triage and referral, and brief intervention with adolescents and families. The Psychologist I will also be involved in case conferences, staff meetings, professional development activities, and will liaise with other AHS and community partners.
Responsibilities/Duties:
The Psychologist will provide clinical leadership and support a wide array of programs based out of Youth Addiction Services Calgary. Duties include the clinical supervision of a number of regulated (i.e. Provisional Psychologists) and non regulated staff, attending relevant meetings, and on-going collaboration with external service providers. The Psychologist will work closely with Program Supervisors to ensure staff are well supported while delivering high quality of services to families.
Qualifications:
• Completion of a Masters degree or PhD in Psychology from an accredited university program
• Current registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists
• A minimum of 5 years of practice as a Registered Psychologist
• A minimum of 3 years providing clinical supervision
• A minimum of 3-5 years working with adolescents and families experiencing addiction / mental health concerns
• An advanced understanding of the trans-theoretical model of change, motivational interviewing, solution focused therapy, narrative therapy, CBT, group process, and assessment
• Advanced certification in the area(s) of family, group or individual therapy preferred
• Proven collaborative leadership and organizational skills with individuals, interdisciplinary teams and other departments and partner service providers

Psychological Assessment Services
Assessments include emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and neuropsychological assessments. The types of Psychological Assessments that may be requested by WCB are:
Comprehensive Psychological Assessment:
. An independent assessment completed by a psychologist in order to confirm the presence of a psychological/psychiatric diagnosis and its relationship to the compensable injury. It includes a range of objective assessment instruments pertinent to the questions posed, as well as symptom validity/response bias testing (SVT), a clinical interview, and review of medical records.
The psychologist uses the information to formulate a DSM diagnosis, its relationship to the compensable accident, treatment recommendations, fitness to work and psychological functional capabilities and work restrictions.
Neuropsychological Assessment:
. A neuropsychological assessment is used to confirm or rule out brain injury and possibly identify other causes for the worker's behaviors. The assessment examines areas of cognitive ability (e.g., memory, problem solving skills, attention, concentration, and intelligence), emotional and psycho-social functioning, motor skills, and personality.
The neuropsychologist uses the information to draw conclusions on whether there is a brain injury, its relationship to the compensable accident, treatment recommendations, fitness to work, psychological functional capabilities, limitations and/or restrictions, and permanent functional impairment.
Psychological Counselling services:
. Individual psychotherapy sessions to address psychological sequelae as a consequence of a work related accident or incident. Presenting issues may include psychological adjustment to injury; depression; anxiety; protracted pain; and traumatic incidents / accidents.
Preference will be given to applicants with specific training and experience pertaining to rehabilitation psychology, pain and stress management, trauma work, and vocational change.
Mandatory Qualifications:
Psychologists must be capable of fulfilling the mandatory qualification and possess the necessary experience, skills and knowledge. Submissions that do not meet all of the mandatory qualification requirements will be not be considered. PURPOSE AND ACCOUTABILITY
The purpose of this position is to provide services for students with developmental, learning, behavioural and social/emotional challenges. The Psychologist acts as a change agent which collaborates with schools,families and communities to create effective, healthy learning environments for Calgary Board of Education (CBE) students with diverse experience and needs. The incumbent is accountable for ensuring effective identification, diagnosis, consultation, intervention and evaluation as well as for meeting both the CBE and Alberta Education requirements regarding the dentification, documentation and monitoring of students with exceptional needs.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
I. Screening and prioritizing of psychological referrals
1. Consults and collaborates with school personnel and/or parents (e.g., school resource group meetings, team meetings, pod meetings).
2. Conducts direct classroom observation of students.
3. Gathers pertinent information from other disciplines.
4. Identifies needs of children and/or school communities.
II. Assessment
1. Conducts assessments using structured and unstructured (e.g., observations, interviews, file reviews) psycho-diagnostic techniques and instruments.
2. Assesses cognitive functioning, academic achievement, learning styles, social/emotional functioning, personality, self esteem and adaptive behaviour.
3. Interprets results of assessments to school personnel and parents.
4. Prepares written assessment reports for the Student Record and for relevant community professionals on request.
III. Diagnosis
1. Contributes to the information base necessary for programming to meet student needs.
2. Provides formal diagnostic opinions as mandated by Alberta Education for the purpose of identifying students eligible for severe disability funding.
3. Integrates multidisciplinary information into viable student modification plans.
4. Prepares written summaries and other documentation as required.
IV. Consultation
1. Consults with school personnel, parents and community professionals and agencies.
2. Acts as a liaison between school personnel, parents and community agencies.
V. Intervention
1. Provides, evaluates and documents direct services to students, parents and teachers, in both individual and group formats, as required:
A. Students
- Learning and behavioural strategies assistance
- Study and organizational skills
- Brief counselling and referral for long-term counselling
- Peer mediation and peer support programs
- Conflict resolution groups
- Social skills groups (e.g., peer relations, bullying)
- Anger management groups
- Mentorship programs
B. Teachers
- Individual program modification, planning evaluations (e.g., assists in the development of IPP's)
- Development of learning, behavioural and social/emotional strategies and programs
C. Parents
- Development of learning, behavioural and social/emotional strategies
- Parent education (e.g. Parent Effectiveness Training)
- Brief counselling and referral for long-term counselling
2. Contributes to staff development by providing workshops and/or presentations within the Calgary Board of Education and the community as required.
3. Provides resource material to support and facilitate educational programming.
4. Provides training and supervision of graduate students and Provisional Psychologists.
5. Provides crisis intervention services (e.g., Calgary Board of Education Crisis Resource Team).
VI. Develops and maintains a high level of knowledge and awareness of the current theory and practice related to meeting the learning and behaviour needs of exceptional learners.
VII. Works collaboratively with other School Support Services staff as well as Area staff to provide a comprehensive service to students with exceptional needs.
VIII. Performs other related responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Registered as a Psychologist in the Province of Alberta. Provisional psychologists who are registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists, have successfully completed the required 1600 hours of supervised practice, and are eligible to be chartered within four months from the date of hire, may be considered.
The incumbent must possess demonstrated:
- combination of suitable education and experience
- assessment and diagnostic skills ability to work with a minimum of supervision
- strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- strong interpersonal skills
- ability to work as a member of an educational team
- personal suitability.
